The department started in the year 1985 with the inception of the college as pass course but department of Bengali started in the year 2003 as Bengali Hons category. The department has two sanctioned post but at present there is one permanent teacher and two part-time teacher.
The department imparts teaching in Honours (800 marks) and as well as pass course (that is combination subject of 400 marks) and compulsory (50 marks) for B.A, B.Sc and B.Com students. Most of the students come from local area, remote village from Birbhum, Murshidabad and also from Jharkhand..
As the college is under the Burdwan University, and the Bengali department, a vital part of the education, the department follows the courses and curriculum set by the University. That is why there is less scope to change or set courses or the programme but we have taken part in ‘Workshop’ and ‘Seminar’ organized by the University for the betterment of the faculty.
The rate of success of the students who appeared at the final examinations of the University during the past five years is highly satisfactory. During the last University Examination 90 % students succeed. Some students placed in the 1st Class.
Sufficient text and reference book for the department have been purchased (UGC fund + College fund) and we have plan to purchase more books of general students.
Normally, teaching is delivered through lecture method but seminar arranged, sometimes we discuss about contemporary lecture, films and current topic.
Teachers try to give their best to the students in the classrooms and outside the class. Also they help for career counseling and higher studies i.e. M.A, distance education / correspondence.
Faculty member attended seminar (State level UGC sponsored and college level seminar) Refresher and O.P, Summer school and benefited a lot
A Minor Research Project under the financial assistance of U.G.C has been completed by the teacher. The teachers have published a good number of books, articles and poems. The priority area of research is “fiction of 20th Century”
As there is no campus interview system for placement exact report in this matter is difficult to state. However from personal contact we have come to know that a good number of our ex-students are established mainly in schools and colleges.
The department will setup a departmental library, L.C.D and will organize seminars by the eminent speakers at regular intervals. We have a plan to organize re-union of Ex-students. Here is also a plan for dialect basis linguistic summary.
